Here is a testimonial letter

Dear Treatment Program (Name Omitted),

I wanted to express my thoughts about Bryan Bowen. During the initial stages of my brother intervention, your current guest as of yesterday, our family was referred to your facility by an out patient program in San Fran. I personally called Duffy’s and spoke with Sarah and ask for a referral to an intervention therapist, Bryan being one of two provided.  It is important for you both to know what impact your referral of Bryan had on our family and myself.

Our family did not know what the term intervention was until my wife Heather suggested it. Our brother Tom had just been admitted to the hospital because his body was failing under his addiction. The bottom was reached. Medically, the hospital stabilized him and released him to my sister, a nurse, my mother and Tom’s family.  The watch began and Tom did not drink for a week. But without an intervention, Tom would still be drinking, as I discovered in a voice mail on Saturday.

We hired Bryan and he championed the cause to completion. I was the initial family contact person with Bryan and he was professional from the start. I did not know Bryan, other than through his website. I had no context, background or anything- just Duffy’s referral.  Now in hindsight, everything is crystal clear. Thank you for selecting Bryan for your referral list. He has the passion, the depth, the anguish, the experiences of 400+ people, the sadness, the hope, the inspiration and the tenacity to convince a person who knows not what they do and causes them to voluntarily enter rehab.  As I warned Bryan in the beginning, my brother Tom is a difficult person. He is a “former” attorney, angry, insecure, reclusive, irrational etc. Bryan methodically initiated a process, counseled our very large family through numerous conference calls and emails preparing us and Tom’s family, including his 15 year old daughter, about what was to occur. He held the intervention and did not stumble, lose focus, nor lose control to Tom and his “ways”.  The intervention was brutal in so many respects, from the utter uncaring stoic presence Tom exhibited (addiction) to the agony and despair pleaded by his young daughter Alex to Tom’s heartlessness reaction to her love. Tom did not agree to go after the intervention, even though his entire family had read their third and final statements to Tom. Tom was the 20% of those people who stubbornly refuse to go to rehab after an intervention. There was Bryan through it all, unwavering. I believe even Bryan could not help but be personally impacted by this intervention. Bryan has been given the gift of grace- to help others. He carries a special energy to move mountains.  Bryan clearly went beyond his agreement with the family, volunteering his personal time without complaint. His door was always open, which was difficult given nearly the entire family was in two other time zones.  If Bryan is the person we now know him to be and you referred him to us, then we know what your program is all about. I have never met Bryan in person, just over the telephone, text and email. That’s a powerful advocate!  Thank you!!!

Marijuana Smoking teen problem in, Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, Napa, Wanut Creek, Orinda, Danville, Lafayette, whole Bay Area – 1st Step Interventions

Marijuana Smoking in the group of adolescent children who are minors in Junior and Senior High School is a REAL PROBLEM in all Bay Area Cities and Counties. – Marin, Sonoma, Napa, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sacramento,San Joaquin etc. All of our Cities such as Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Novato, San Rafael, Mill Valley, Napa, St Helena, Danville, Walnut Creek, Orinda, Lafayette, Berkeley, San Jose Santa Cruz and on and on.

200423600-001

The scariest thing is we really should not be calling it the same drug name we used in the ’70′s. Pot is 7 time plus more powerful than it was then. It would be like making beer 80 proof like vodka (instead of it’s 6% alcohol content) and still calling it Beer – that would be crazy, but it is what we do.

So our children and young adults in our families are smoking super strong Psychoactive substances while their young brains are still growing and the result is damage to their brains. A recent study http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2012/08/22/1206820109.abstract shows that cessation, if the user stops using pot the Brain does not return to a normal pre-damaged state. This is really scary. If we allow our children or young 21 year old family memmber to smoke pot on a regular basis, they are damaging their brain, their memory, attention, ability to think abstractly etc.. and this damage is permanent.

As Parents and law abiding caring citizens we need to risk talking to our young human cohorts, family members or children about the dangers of regular smoking of marijuana. I know personally of one 15 year old I have worked with who took a math test high on week and got a 48 the next week not high he took the same test and got an 88. the only difference was marijuana.

Take the time to know what your children are doing, be involved with your older kids.If you see Pot smoking speak up and be willing to tell them the truth of what you are seeing and the dangers. If you are smoking be willing to change your behaviors to help your children. We have a large population now of young adults who are suffering with flat affects and who are having difficulty launching into life. Of course and unfortunately if they are addicts their solution is to smoke more pot and just make the situations worse as it is a Chronic Disease and Expert Intervention

Many Parents themselves smoke Pot and need to get out of the mind set that it is harmless to their children. They need to realize IT IS a different drug and that they (the parents)may only be smoking a hit of pot), but their children are smoking far more than that and the results are not positive and hurting their children and their chances at a good life. If their child is also suffering from Addiction then the results are going to be far worse and without Recovery. If you are a Parent reading this and think you need help feel free to call us we offer a free assessment and can help you,

Following Your Continuing Care Plan Is The Key To Sobriety – 1st step Interventions

logoLet’s face it the majority of people come to Sobriety via a Treatment Program and when they leave they get a Continuing Care Plan. Just like when you leave after being in a hospital you get going home instructions. There is a reason for it. In Recovery your Continuing Care Plan is your Road Map to “A Lasting Focus On Recovery”

success failureWhether you are a patient or a Family Member, you should be 100% familiar with what is on the Continuing Care Plan. This is going to be the key to your success or failure in Recovery, and this affects the Family too, so there is no reason for the Family not to be included in what is on it. Addiction is a Chronic Brain Disease that is never going to go away, taking care of it daily then should be a priority. In my Addiction Care Management practice I make it a point for the Patient to share with the Family their Continuing Care Plan. My private practice is located in the 100 miles around San Francisco, so I cover Sacramento, Sonoma County, Marin County, Contra Costa County, Santa Clara County, all the way down to Carmel and over to Fresno and Stockton. I also know from personal experience and all that I have seen working in this field for 15 years with over 1000+ Addicts and Families and having performed over 350+ Interventions, that following the Continuing Care Plan works.

I often ask myself if this is the case, then why do 80% of the people who leave treatment relapse – I have figured out a few reasons and please pay attention to these – relapse out of treatment may mean the difference between your life and death. This is mostly because Narcotics users and some Alcoholics have been used to having high tolerances and when they relapse they use what they were using before, not really realizing that 28 days of not using has diminished their tolerance – and they overdose or their organs (particularly heart) give out.

  • Human Nature – When we feel better we stop doing what was working. How many with the flu who get 10 Antibiotic pills don’t take the last 2 or 3 because they feel better. Or if you lost 20 lbs, stop doing what got you there and next thing you know you are back 20lbs heavier again. It pays to have additional on going Professional Care after Treatment that can keep you on track.
  • Issues Post Treatment – We don’t realize in Rehab that afterwards other potential issues can raise their ugly head – what do we do then. If we are not following our Continuing Care Plan we tend not to have the support to deal with these negative internal feelings and since our coping skills are not there yet, we medicate them.
  • Don’t’ take AA or NA seriously – too many people get caught up in the fact that the word God is in the 12 steps – who cares when the 12 steps are going to save your life. Being a member of a 12 Step Group or community doesn’t mean you just go to meetings, say nothing and leave. That’s like saying your a chicken just because you’re sitting in a chicken coup. Being a member means you have worked the program and that means having a Sponsor and working the 12 Steps.
  • Families do not become members of Al Anon or CoDA (Codependents Anonymous), therefore they stay stuck and unable to discuss with the Patient issues related to the Patient not following their Continuing Care Plan. If you sign up for Addiction Care Management and have a Professional helping they are also helping the Family through this time of early sobriety and keeping the focus on them and their feelings so they can break the cycle of codependency and enabling.
  • The biggest mistake Patients and Families make after Treatment is – “The Patient is Fixed” – you could not be farther from the truth. Let’s break down treatment. 1st week into 2nd is Detox and the Patient can barely function let alone hear what is being said. 3rd week is usually Family Week and the Patient is all nervous about that and focusing their attention on that. 4th week they are making plans to leave and are focused there. Then it is over. It seems then why bother and the answer is – Absolutely Bother -  the results are subtle, yet HUGE and what you get if you continue working with and on them by following your Continuing Care Plan is an almost guarantee of Long-Term Sobriety.

No one ever said Sobriety was easy – I have read about every book on the subject and I have yet to come across those words. What they do say is Sobriety is possible for everyone – “If They Follow Their Continuing Care Plan” If you have spent a lot of money on Treatment, Intervention and helping a Patient get back on their feet post Treatment if their Addiction cost them everything, then what does it hurt to spend a little more and add Addiction Care Management and the “Giant Benefits” you get from a program like it. The benefit of adding it through 1st Step Interventions is we are the first the found the model 3 years ago and since then have helped more Patients than anyone else with it and that experience is worth every penny. Also, almost 100% of the patients we did Interventions on were signed up for Addiction Care Management and today I am proud to say each and everyone is still working a Recovery Program and following their Continuing Care Plan.

Sobriety is the best thing that can happen to an Addict and their Family – take it seriously and take all that you are suggested seriously. We at 1st Step Interventions wish you the Courage to walk every day in the footprints of Recovery and face the wreckage of your past, because once you do that it doesn’t get easy, but it sure gets easier!

Bay Area Rehabs

Some are Excellent, some are Good and some are Newer and seem to be riding the wave of Private pay “Riches” or “Robbery”.

How is a person to tell the difference and make the right choice?

How can one justify 40=50k for a Month in Treatment just to be told to go to AA. After all I can tell you that for free. The Treatment Industry has painted itself into an ugly corner in my experience and I am not sure all are interested in getting out.– after all is will eat into their bottom line. Though if you are in this to get rich, you are in the wrong industry and you are going to end up hurting Patients. Now I am not saying this about every Center – there are some legit, ethical well run Centers in Northern California who put the welfare of the Patient first in every decision – That is the type of Center I will refer to in my Intervention Business and the kind of Center you will receive the best Health Care for you or your loved one.

I am going to be starting blogging on the current state of Treatment Services of all types in the Bay Area and at the same time my website www.addictionrehabexpert.com will be focusing primarily on the topic of Treatment options in the Bay Area, as this site 1st Step Interventions is for Intervention Primarily, and issues relative to it. However, the state of Treatment is an appropriate topic.

Treatment ranges from Residential, to Outpatient.  Payment wise they go from Private pay, to Insurance being accepted and finally free or County funded. Lengths of stay also are between 5 days for Detox to 90 days or even longer. Obviously the Money portion is easy worked out depending on the individuals or families finances, but how do you know what is the appropriate length of time and is the Center just trying to keep the Patient longer for financial reasons – yes that happens.

There are literally hundreds of Treatment Beds from Sacramento to Carmel, some are excellent, some good and some are staffed poorly and therefore there level of treatment is reflected by it.

As I continue this Series and once www.addictionrehabexpert.com is up and running I will go more in depth. One issue or question you might have that I want to address up front and that is why am I not writing about Centers outside Northern California.  The reason is that I have been in this business for almost 15 years now and have seen no evidence that supports the cost of sending someone far away for Treatment. If you think you are sending them away from bad influences, they are there in whatever Center you choose. If you think it will keep them in Treatment and they will not leave, wrong, I have seen plenty of Patients leave Treatment and make it home. They usually go around and borrow money form other Patients for all kinds of reasons and then once they have cab money and a plane ticket or bus ticket they are gone. Or they find a friends or old girlfriend or boyfriend to help them. Or they will just get themselves kicked out so you are forced to bring them home.

I have come to believe through my Private Practice and my work as an Executive Director in a Center, that having a Patient in their home area where they are going to set up their Recovery Network and where they can meet Therapists or others like myself and my Addiction Care Management www.addictioncaremanagement.com to help them post treatment. And like any other Chronic illness have regular Professional contact with them to make sure their Disease is getting better, remaining in remission and they are making progress in their lives.
